From Students to Strategists: 4 Lessons We’re Taking Back to Campus After Our GradComm Marketing Internship

Let’s face it, no matter how many textbooks you read or lectures you sit through, nothing beats learning on the job. This summer, we stepped into the real world of higher education marketing through our internship at GradComm, and wow, what a ride.

Now, as we head back to campus, we’re not just carrying a backpack and laptop. We’re carrying real world skills, lessons, and a totally new perspective on what marketing can be.

This post is for students wondering what internships are really like, educators who mentor future marketers, and higher ed pros trying to make their marketing more meaningful.

Strategy Over Flash: Marketing That Connects

Before our internship, we thought marketing was all about social media posts and eye-catching graphics. While those things matter, we quickly learned that strategy is what drives real results.

We worked on:

  • Social media posts that boosted engagement
  • Email campaigns that got clicks
  • Blog content designed for specific audiences (hello, prospective students!)

In higher ed, marketing isn’t just about looking good; it’s about saying something that matters to the right people. Every caption, graphic, or newsletter has a reason behind it.

What we’re taking back to school:

Now, whether we’re prepping a class presentation or writing for a campus club, we’ll be thinking: Who’s the audience? What’s the goal? And how do we make it stick?

Remote Work Isn’t Scary, It’s a Skill

Interning remotely sounded intimidating at first. But once we got into the rhythm of Slack check ins, Google Docs edits, and Zoom brainstorms, it clicked: Remote teamwork is real teamwork.

Our toolbox:

  • Slack for quick questions and updates
  • Google Docs & Excel for live collaboration
  • Google Calendar and Teamwork to stay on task

Group projects in college can be chaotic. But we’ve learned how to lead with clarity, stay organized, and collaborate even across different time zones and schedules.

What we’re taking back to school:

We’ll be that person in the group project who sets the agenda, keeps things moving, and makes sure everyone’s heard.

AI Isn’t the Enemy, It’s an Assistant

Let’s talk about the thing everyone’s buzzing about: AI.

We used tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Canva’s AI features to:

  • Brainstorm creative ideas
  • Tighten up writing without losing our tone
  • Build faster, smarter workflows

Yes, AI can help you do more. But it can’t replace your voice especially in higher education, where authenticity matters. Whether you’re writing for first gen students or career changers, your words still need heart and context.

What we’re taking back to school:

We’ll keep using AI to support our work but we’re not handing it the mic.

Our Biggest Takeaway: Mindset Matters

This internship wasn’t just about skills. It changed how we think.

We now understand:

  • Marketing is rooted in empathy, strategy, and clarity
  • Teamwork isn’t about doing everything, it’s about doing it together
  • Technology (especially AI) is a tool, not a shortcut

For students: Say yes to opportunities that stretch you.
For educators: Thank you for making space where we can turn learning into action.

Key Takeaways for Higher Ed Marketers & Interns

Marketing Strategy: Start with the audience. Every project should solve a real problem and tell a meaningful story.

Teamwork: Remote or in person, communication tools + clear roles = project success.

AI Tools: Use them smartly. They’re powerful, but your voice is still your most valuable asset.

Internships: They’re not just resume boosters, they’re perspective shifters.

We’re heading back to campus not just as students, but as future marketers with a clearer sense of purpose. Thanks, GradComm, for letting us grow, learn, and contribute in ways we’ll never forget.
